2009 School deliberative session

With only 71 in attendance the meeting was the shortest ever according to those that attended. The meeting only lasted 45 minuets with the $60,736,146 School budget moved to the warrant with no discussion at all. The budget is about 2.3% below the default budget that would be passed if the voters voted against the school board recommended budget. “This is a bit of an oddity that takes some getting used to.” Said Steve Young of the Londonderry School Board, “The default is $1.4 Million higher than our recommendations. Even if the voters approve the Union contracts, we will still be under default. The superintendent and the board has shown that it understands the fiscal situation the country and community is in.”

Bangor Business School’s IBM success

This year our IBM Business Challenge teams have yet again done us proud. Last year we entered three teams, one of which made it through to the semis. This year we entered four teams that were put together following a formal and rigorous interview process, of which we had over forty applicants. Our four teams were led by Sarah Graham, Henry Ye, Chris Coe and Leah Jones.

This year’s competition got tougher with all universities ‘upping their antes’ and entering more teams. Out of the 250 teams in Round 1 only the top 80 teams went through to the semi-finals. Dr Clair Doloriet of Bangor Business School said: “This year all four of our teams made it through, which when compared with the likes of Liverpool University who entered twelve teams (with six going through) demonstrates the quality, commitment and determination of our teams.”

Top 100 MBA schools in the world - ISB ranked 15

It is that season of the year. Not the top list season but the business school season. Aspiring students in India and across the world will be starting their careers in management in the next 6 months. In India the much coveted CAT exam results are out with the fate of many students hanging.

The debate is always intense whether to do a global MBA or a Indian MBA. One more debate is the 1 year vs 2 year MBA. If you want some clarity in these then go to PagalGuy. You can find a lot of good discussion which can steer you clear. Financial Times has published the list of top 100 MBA schools in the world. The list is for the year 2009.

Indian School of Business, Hyderabad

Of the 100 schools quite predictably USA has dominated the proceedings. 55 out of 100 schools are from the USA. It is distantly followed by UK and Canada. It is hard to find an Indian school on a list like this few years back. But times have changed.

Indian School of Business or ISB which offers a 1 year MBA course is ranked at 15. This is an improvement from last year’s ranking. ISB was ranked 20 last year. Among the asian nations China and Singapore has 2 schools each listed in the top 100. ISB is the only Indian school to be listed.

Financial Times prepares this data from 9000 business school alumni across 130 countries. London Business School and Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania are ranked at number 1. (source)

Birmingham Business School 2008 Advisory Board Meeting

The annual Advisory Board took place in mid November, with Lord Digby Jones making a welcome return to the Chair.

Rebecca Harding gave the Annual Advisory Board Address at the Business School on the afternoon prior to the main meeting. The address asked whether setting up and growing a business is possible in the current economic climate, which Rebecca approached from the perspective of her company’s survey of founders and entrepreneurs in the UK and her own experience as an entrepreneur. Sharing the results of discussions with members of the World Entrepreneur Society, Rebecca looked at some of the challenges faced by policy makers when trying to stimulate an entrepreneurially based economy against the background of economic and financial turmoil. The talk was extremely well received and provided some interesting revelations that questioned assumptions about serial entrepreneurs, ethnicity and gender in entrepreneurship and explored initial evidence, stemming from her survey, on what really motivates entrepreneurs and how they succeed. Advisory Board members, students, alumni, academic faculty and regional business figures, including representatives from Advantage West Midlands, Science City and the Chamber of Commerce were in attendance making for a very interesting networking opportunity at the drinks reception which followed. Rebecca also had chance to meet with members of faculty who teach on the Business School’s Small Business and Enterprise modules, which has spawned additional collaboration with Rebecca in this area and generated ideas to develop these programmes.

Postgraduate Open Evening

The open evening is a unique opportunity for those interested in postgraduate study within the University of Exeter Business School to visit us, learn more about our programmes of study, meet members of faculty and the postgraduate administrative team and experience the exceptional atmosphere and first class teaching facilities found within the School.

The programme will start with an address from senior members of the faculty as an introduction to the University of Exeter, the Business School and the range of postgraduate programmes available. There will then follow a series of presentations by programme directors and key staff members for our three core areas of study: Finance, Management and Economics. Plans for the new Business School building have been given final permission from Kirklees Council with construction scheduled to start in February this year. The new building will represent the next major building investment for the university at an estimated cost of £14 million.

Anglia Ruskin team wins semi-final at Proctor & Gamble, Friday 13th February 2009

The AIBS student team won through their IBM UBC heats (held October - December 2008) in which 240 university teams competed. 80 teams went through to the ten semi-finals. Our team won their semi-final held at Proctor & Gamble on Friday 13th February 2009.

The team will now appear in the UBC grand final at IBM Europe headquarters on Friday 6th March, competing with the top teams including three teams from Imperial College and two from Exeter.

Anglia Ruskin teams have won through to the grand finals in 2006, 2008 and 2009. The team was second to Manchester University in 2006 and was victorious in 2008

The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School and London Business School have topped a Financial Times league table of the world's best business schools.

The two MBA schools pipped the prestigious Harvard Business School, whose alumni include the former US president George W. Bush, to joint top spot in the Financial Times table.

The top ranking marks the culmination of a decade of progress at London, which has climbed steadily since making eighth place in the inaugural league table in 1999

New Ideas for Online Classrooms

If you've avoided online learning because of its lack of interaction and overuse of the infamous "PowerPoint Lecture," now may be a good time to give it a second chance. Online colleges are learning from their mistakes and putting together online classrooms that rival the traditional learning experience. U.S. News and World Report explains:

"E-learning is getting an upgrade. Some professors and schools are redesigning their courses to take advantage of the Web's interactive and visual possibilities, adopting some bleeding-edge technologies such as gamelike simulations and digital avatars to make online courses more exciting and more effective than traditional classrooms. Many students even say that a good E-learning course inspires them to work harder."

Not convinced? Ask a potential online college for a run-through of a course. Many schools now provide sample courses for interested parties to explore.

CCE Launches Innovative Hybrid Training Program

The College of Continuing Education has entered into a partnership with a leading UK eLearning service provider to co-deliver management and leadership training via a combination of face-to-face and online learning. The new partnership will allow CCE to reach even remote parts of Kazakhstan to deliver its trainings.

The partner company, 'New Leaders Learning' specializes in providing online training and has partnered with organizations like the 'Institute of Administrative Management' based in London. The first client for this new mode of training is the international organization, 'ESS' who manage the facilities and logistics on behalf of Tengizchevroil at Tengiz and their headquarters in Atyrau. ESS has over 3,200 employees in Tengiz and Atyrau alone. The training program will pilot for a year with an option to extend for several more.

UC-IRVINE DEVELOPS ONLINE COURSES TO PREPARE K-12 TEACHERS FOR THE CSET. The B'eing Co. (http://www.b'eing.com) and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation (http://www.hewlett.org) have given a grant worth $350,000 to the University of California- Irvine to develop online courses that will address the urgent need to help prepare science and math teachers to pass the California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET). Due to a lack of familiarity with the content or format of the exams, more than 40 percent of teachers do not pass the CSET test on their first attempt. The grant will be used to help create 10 science and three math instructor-facilitated online courses designed to cover the respective subtests of the CSET, which will be made available as a UCI Extension program. This initiative complements the “California Teach” plan, which hopes to graduate at least four times as many new math and science teachers by 2010. In addition, the courses will be used as part of the growing Open Educational Resource movement, thereby allowing self-learners to view and utilize the materials and resources online for free.

Before I begin this entry, I would like to confess that I am not a proponent player on EVE Online. In fact, I have only had casual experiences with MMOs due to budget constraints and unwarranted fears towards the genre. But this has not kept me away from venturing into the various free MMOs and trials available on the Internet. But ever since EVE Online was brought to my attention years ago, I have had an unhealthy infatuation with its inter-galactic universe.

For those unaware, EVE Online has often been described as one of the most onerous of hardcore, gold farming MMOs. The character leveling system is not determined by experience through quests or missions, but is time-fixed (i.e. skills are acquired from a predetermined length of time). The player does not need to be logged into the game to even level up. But this system of leveling is not what compels players to EVE Online, but rather the universe’s in-game economy system.
